Two primary beneficiaries are the focus of the
Eyes of San Diego Project.
The first is the East Village Mural Project, which will be the first in a series
of arts projects planned as part of an East Village Beautification
Program sponsored by the East Village Community Action Network
(EVCAN).
Our second beneficiary is the Chicano Park School of Arts (CPSA), which works
in affiliation with the King/Chavez Academy Charter School (K-12) at Chicano
Park in Logan Heights.
Each of these neighborhood groups seeks to unite community members through participation
in beautification projects. Art within the landscape generates a sense
of pride and enhances the quality of life for residents.
Ultimately, they believe
the arts can also help to reunite the East Village and Logan Heights neighborhoods,
bridging the divide created when the Interstate 5 freeway severed the two communities
in the early 1960s.
In their 1981 article about Chicano Park, San Diego State University geography
professors Larry Ford and Ernest Griffin noted that public art "records a heritage,
announces current issues, and advocates future actions" and is "integral in personalizing
the landscape".
Since our coalition's mission is to bring the arts together
in San Diego through the eventual establishment of a downtown community arts
center, we encourage the efforts of EVCAN and CPSA, who are indeed attempting
to record, announce, and advocate THROUGH ART!
